Love and Suffering essays The way love and suffering have shaped my life is through my childhood. It was a difficult childhood but I learned as I watched my mother go through trials and tribulations with my father. Being raised in a home where the man ruled the house, at a very young age I witnessed my mothers love for my dad and her extreme suffering because of the way my father reciprocated that love. My mother gave so much only to get nothing in return except infidelity and shame from my fathers extracurricular activities which included cheating on my mother constantly and pilfering money from the family business to spend on his mistresses. I remember waking up in the middle of the night finding my mother in the living room crying because my father didnt come home. She loved him so much and really believed in marriage - that no matter what, you stay married even if you are being treated unfairly. Making things worse, was the fact that my family was living in one of my grandmothers houses. My mother was not allowed to make any decision without my grandmothers approval even when it came to her own children. As I look back while I write this journal about love and suffering, I cannot deny the fact that the way I loved in my past relationship has a lot to do with what Ive observed as a child and experienced. In my past relationship I remember loving someone so much that I was willing to endure whatever difficulties I had to face. I stayed with my boyfriend at that time even though he was not very nice to me. I was pregnant at that time and he was hardly there to help me out. He was always out and about with his friends and other women. Sometimes he wouldnt come home till the next day. I remember the tears I shed over this man, and I will never forget the hurt I felt. The fact of the matter is that many elderly people do not know their rights and will simply go along with whatever the carer wants to do with them. The Ruthwell Cross The Ruthwell Cross is a late seventh or early eighth century sculpted "preaching" cross. It can currently be found in the town of Ruthwell, near Dumfries in southern Scotland. Standing about 17 feet tall, the cross is adorned with Latin and Anglo-Saxon runic inscriptions and carvings. The cross, almost thirteen centuries old, has as much history as one would expect for an artifact of this age. The Ruthwell Cross was partially dismantled most likely during 1642 at the order of the Church of Scotland General Assembly. The General Assembly was looking to rid Scotland of items of Roman worship. Believed to be connected with Roman worship, the cross was dismantled and spread out on the grounds of a small church in Ruthwell. Its pieces, which were large in size, were used as paving in some parts of the church grounds. In the early 1800's the pieces were located and the cross was reconstructed at the order of Reverend Doctor Henry Duncan. Although most of the cross was found and pieced together, Duncan had to construct a new crossbeam for the cross. The significance of the cross lies in its inscriptions and carvings. Some of the carvings on the cross are said to symbolize passages from the New Testament. Portions of the Anglo-Saxon runic inscriptions have been determined to be passages from one of the most recognized Old English religious poems, "The Dream of the Rood." There is some controversy surrounding this poem, as its author and date of creation remain unknown to this day. Some historians believe it was written by the famous poet Caedmon; however, there is no proof that it is his work. In conclusion, the Ruthwell Cross has a detailed and important history behind. Its runic inscriptions and carvings give us insight into what the culture was like in those times. The media has clouded women’s perceptions in their body image by demonstrating the ‘ideal bodies’ on TV and magazines through print and film advertising, increasing the pressure for women and young girls to be ‘thin’, further leading to a more complex issue of Eating Disorders. Women who do not live up to societies expectations, and are suffocated with the phoney concept of the ‘ideal’ are treated with disregard and discrimination. For instance, Adrian Furnham and Nicola Greaves (1994) argue that the core of body image dissatisfaction is a discrepancy between a person’s perceived body and their ideal. They further argue that a failure to match the ‘ideal’ leads to self- criticism, guilt and lowered self worth. This effect is stronger for women than for men due to the cultural pressures on women to conform to an idealised body shape are more powerful and more wide spread than those on men. Psychologists have suggested that the media can affect women’s body esteem by becoming a reference point against which unfavourable body shape comparisons are made (Grogan 1999). These visions are then propagated through popular culture via television reality make over shows of re shaping the body, â€Å" if films of body transformation provide the vision that inspires women to re- make their bodies, the cosmetic and â€Å"aesthetic medicine† industry sell them the equipment† (Fox-Kales, 2011, p. 74. ) Women are objectified by an unrealistic expectation of beauty, put forward by models and actresses who do not reflect the average appearance of women in society. Print advertising, in particular, provides a not only unrealistic, but unhealthy ideal of what it means to be physically attractive. By these false images being presented, the media has created an ideology of attractiveness. Images have powerful effects on their readers, serving to maintain a ‘cult of femininity’ and supplying definitions of what it means to ‘be a woman’. Marjorie Ferguson (1985) investigated women’s magazines from a sociological perspective. She argued that women’s magazines contribute to the wider cultural process, which helps to shape a woman’s view of herself, and societies views of her. The media is littered with mages of females who fulfill these unrealistic standards, making it seem as if it is normal for women to live up to this ideal. Dittmar and Howard (2004) made this statement regarding the prevalence of unrealistic media images: Ultra-thin models are so prominent that exposure to them becomes unavoidable and ‘chronic’, constantly reinforcing a discrepancy for most women and girls between their actual size and the ideal body (p. 478). Research has repeatedly shown that constant exposure to thin models and actresses fosters body image concerns and disordered eating in many females. Eating Disorders are a direct result from the medias influence to look ‘thin’. Eating disorders theorists and feminist scholars have long indicated fashion magazines, movies, television, and advertising for their advocacy of disordered eating (Levine & Smolak, 1998). Media images of women make it difficult for individuals to hold an internalized ideal body that is realistic and attainable. With exposure to repeated images of ultra thin women, an individual’s internalized ideal body often becomes much thinner. This increases the gap between what a person feels their physical appearance is, and what it should be. Researchers have found that women who have an internalized ideal body that closely resembles the socially represented ideal body are at a particularly high risk to develop body image disturbance and disordered eating patterns (Sands & Wardle, 2003). Naomi Wolf argues that our culture disempowers women by holding them prisoner to an unattainable beauty ideal (Wolf, 1990). The epidemic proportions of drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and unsafe weight control methods among women have led theorists to posit the existence of mechanisms that are capable of reaching a large number of women (Levine & Smolak, 1998). Today’s expectations reveal that looks matter more than personality and intelligence as seen on various dating shows. It is universally agreed upon that people on these shows usually pick the best looking counterpart out of the group of contestants. Both men and women are concerned with appearance than personality on these types of programs. This phenomenon is transferred into the job market, where people are now more prone to hire the more attractive candidate. Research has found that more attractive workers even receive higher compensation than unattractive counterparts even where they perform the same work and have similar levels of work experience. The media targets young women drilling thinness and having no flaws as the height of being beautiful. Now, with the common use of plastic surgery you can change your overall appearance. Plastic surgery has become a more than 8 billion a year industry† (Hess – Biber, 2005:96). Women feel they need to have the perfect nose, and cheek bones to fit in to the media’s criteria, in order to appear more attractive to the opposite sex. Therefore, it is evident that the media has played a significant role in ‘shaping women’s bodies’ to suit ‘societies expectations’ by showcasing the recurring idea to be ‘thin’. These ideas are brought upon through various television shows and magazines, which further stimulate eating disorders.

If you’re a fitness freak like me or spend countless hours in the gym rather than your own home you know what goes on wants you step a foot in the gym. But at one point or another we’ve all seen nasty, irritating, and confusing behavior by others at a gym or reaction center. Like for instance it are giant puddles of sweat left on machines, a meathead hoarding dumbbells in a packed weight room, or that one old man or women nude in the locker room. Nevertheless, for some people common respect seems to disappear in a gym setting now days. However, the common pet peeves I have always experience is preventable if people follow my advice, then everyone’s workout will go peacefully and smoothly. One of my many pet peeves is when a crazy sweaty people do not clean there machine because sweat spread diseases. For example, they continually leave giant puddles of sweat all over workout equipment. Not only sweat is a problem with me, but also people who do not pick up after themselves. Such as free weights, foam rollers, towels, and yoga mats. My subjection is it back where it belongs if you use it. In addition, I am quite sure others around you do not want the most common decease in gyms now days so be kind and pick up after yourself. Arrebota2 People should not hog equipment because it waste time and prevent others from working out. I can’t stand when people who grab one piece of equipment and won’t let you work in. For example, every time I go into 24-hour fitness in Kansas City. Sadly, there is always that one male or female who puts their bag down next to the squat rack and reserve it like it is a plane ticket. However, even after they get on the squat rack they spend about twenty-five percent of the time lifting, and the next seventy-five percent cursing around talking to friends or staring at mirror acting like a peacock. If you do not want to work out fully get off the machine and let others who are waiting use it because they do not want to spend all day waiting at a gym waiting. In my gym, it is common to see nude people walking around the locker room because they are not courteous or respectful. The most people who do these things are the elderly people. I don’t know why but they feel like it’s okay to walk around the locker room nude for hours and not try to cover their sleeves. I mean dropping a towel quickly to pull on your clothes is one thing, but standing at the mirror brushing your teeth while completely naked is another. If this is a problem for you take my advice and tell the manager. Ask if they could hang a nice, and polite sign saying to â€Å"practice covering yourself†. For some people they might not know what goes on in a gym setting because they do not work out every day. Then again, If you are a fitness freak like me than, you must have experience at least two out of the three examples I talked about. On the other hand, if you are one of those people who cause my pet peeves please be responsible for your actions and treat others Arrebota3 with respect. Try to prevent the nasty, and irritating things that goes on in the gym so everyone’s workout can go peacefully and smoothly.

The movie is started with a tranquil setting of two kids sitting in the countryside in a vehicle. Very subtly, they are announcing the events of an advance from Russia into the country of Iran. Russia is sending troops into Iran because they do not have a Communist Government ruling. Russia wants to correct this flaw and make it a Communist country. The United States of America hears news of the advances and threatens the Russian Government to pull out the troops and leave Iran alone. Russia, being stubborn, doesnt comply to the threats and withholds retreat. This reaction to the threat causes the US to threaten them with a war. The British government started to inform the leaders of the cites to go to the bunkers and start to plan for a war, plus come up with a plan to control the city after, if a war does occur. The US wanted to watch the actio ns taking place, so they sent some submarines over to the Persian Gulf to survey the motives of the Russian troops. One of the submarines that was in the area suddenly, without a trace, disappeared. The US suspected that Russia had somehow destroyed the submarine without any detection. This stunt was the leading element to the panic and wide spread fear throughout the world. People with fear of a war started to buy food and fuel. The tension heated up again when Russia decided to move nuclear weapons into their base in Iran. This is the stepping stone to the first nuclear explosions. The US sent over a fleet of B-52 fighter planes to bomb the base that they were in. Unfortunately, the US forgot that they had nuclear tipped missiles. Russia shot the B-52s out of the air with, just a few, of their ample supply of missiles. These actions started widespread panic, and people just started to go crazy and buy everythin...

Reasons Not to Call Someone Racist It may not always be a good idea to call someone a racist, since many people, including bigots themselves, dont have a clear grasp of what racism is. Instead, they think racism is something in which only extremists take part. This means that even if a person does something that screams textbook â€Å"racist† to you, the individual in question will very likely disagree, making your decision to identify him as such backfire. Fortunately, other strategies to deal with racism exist than dropping the R-word. Labeling another person racist sometimes simply doesn’t work. Labeling Others Begets Defensiveness If you’ve ever called someone racist be it a friend, family member or coworker recall the person’s reaction. Did your acquaintance accept the label without question or challenge this description? More than likely, the person tried to defend his or herself and explain away any suggestion that she’s racist. When people become defensive, it’s difficult to get them to understand why their behavior offended others. So, rather than calling someone a name that will probably produce a knee-jerk reaction in him, focus on his behavior and how it upset you. Explain that your feelings were hurt when the person made a sweeping generalization about Latinos and how similar statements have led others to mistreat the racial group. Some Who Are Called Racist Issue Meaningless Apologies When public figures say or do something that society deems racist, they often apologize shortly after the gaffe lands them in the headlines, but this has proven problematic. One never knows if these figures apologize because they understand why their behavior hurt others or due to pressure from civil rights groups and the embarrassment of misstepping racially in public. The same thing can happen between two ordinary people. Say an employee accuses a co-worker of being racist. The co-worker apologizes out of fear of being reported to supervisors, a lawsuit being filed or being judged by fellow staffers, not because she truly feels remorse for causing hurt. Others who apologize for racist behavior may do so with no real agenda. These individuals may apologize because they dislike confrontation and are truly mortified about having said or done something considered racist. They say â€Å"sorry† to silence the other party and quickly get the awkward episode behind them. In each case, those labeled â€Å"racist† give empty apologies, ultimately learning little about racism and the hurt it causes. Racism Has Different Meanings for Different People Your definition of racism may not be the same as another’s  so calling someone else racist may not yield the results you’re after. If the person you believe is racist only considers people in white supremacist groups worthy of the label, it’s unlikely that the two of you will see eye-to-eye. Given this, rather than concentrate on the term â€Å"racist,† instead concentrate on why the person’s words or actions hurt you. Explain why you take issue with the person who clutched her purse when a black youth passed by or who talked down to a Latino serviceman. It’s definitely not your job to get others to â€Å"see the light† about racism, but if you’ve taken the risk of calling someone â€Å"racist,† it’s likely important to you that the individual in question understands why you object to her behavior. Therefore, explain to her that you don’t like when people make assumptions about others based on race. That’s why you spoke out when she clutched her purse upon crossing paths with a black youth. To you, that signals racial prejudice and you hope that she can refrain from such hurtful behavior in the future. Racism Is a General Word Sometimes â€Å"racism† isn’t the best word to describe someone’s behavior because it isn’t specific enough. Rather than using a word such as â€Å"racist,† perhaps you want to point out to a friend that his behavior stereotyped Asian women or that the comment he made about undocumented immigrants was xenophobic. The more specific you are when criticizing people for being racially insensitive, the better chance you have of getting them to see what made their behavior offensive. The Term Is Overused in Certain Circles In some settings, such as colleges and universities, words such as â€Å"racism† are thrown around all the time. The result is that racism and other â€Å"isms† begin to lose their currency. It may not be particularly disturbing for someone who hears references to various â€Å"isms† daily to suddenly find himself on the receiving end of such a term. The individual may easily shrug the label off, noting that  at his college classmates call people racist all the time. It’s then easy for him to reason that you are overreacting by using the term in reference to him. In such situations, you’re far better off focusing on the guy’s behavior than on labeling it. Ask him questions, such as how he knows it’s true that all people of a certain group engage in a particular activity. Challenge him when he professes to know that one racial group is better than another in certain fields. Wrapping Up By focusing on words and actions instead of on labels, you may be able to get individuals who show racial insensitivity to rethink their behavior. By calling them racist, however, you’re much more likely to get an empty apology and defensive rationalizations, all while the person who offended you remains as clueless about racism as ever.
